Here's a brief writeup of my published creative work from 2025 in the order I wrote them, and three works written before 2025, but published or re-published this year. The titles link to the works. Go read them!

Consequences

"Consequences" critiques Trump's first 100 Presidential Actions taken in his first 14 days in office by taking their titles (from the White House website), extracting their nouns, verbs, and adjectives and using them as data to generate new speculative Presidential actions. The emoji choices are a reference to Signalgate, which offered insight into the government officials and President responsible for these actions.

Anti-Woke Lullaby

"Anti-Woke Lullaby" is a generative digital poem that repurposes the structure of the traditional lullaby "Hush, Little Baby" to critique political complacency. It was written as a response to all the right wing attacks on so-called woke culture. My idea was to unpack and reverse the metaphor: if seeing injustice and deciding to do something about it is to awaken, then those who benefit or from or don't care about the injustice must want to go back to sleep. This lullaby is for them.

"Punch Flag Fire" is a critique of the measures enacted by President Trump and his government that results in the massive loss of immigrants and citizens, impoverishing the U.S.A. through workforce, talent, and brain drain, while attracting and enriching oligarchs. Michael Waltz's now viral emoji trio (👊🇺🇸🔥) represents the attitude (and ineptitude) of Trump and his administration, as they do lasting damage to the country through measures meant to further their toxic agenda.

No Kings Haiku

"No Kings Haiku" makes a selection of real slogans from the No Kings protests, organizes them as short and long (variables a & b, respectively) and randomly generates haiku with a minimalist Python script. The resulting haikus draw attention to the common ideas and the use of the poetic function of language used in protest slogans. Here's the Python script, which you can run in your computer's terminal or an online Python compiler:

Tiny Protests: No Kings

"Tiny Protests: No Kings" makes use of emoji, animation, and the passage of time to tell a story, much as I did in earlier iterations of Tiny Protests & Protestitas. It commemorates the No Kings protest movement in the USA, particularly the massive nationwide protests on June 14 and October 18, 2025. All the slogans are drawn from signs in photos documenting these protests across the nation. The work also critiques how President Trump has responded to peaceful protests in Los Angeles, Portland, Chicago, and other locations. The work has 5 movements, so it takes about 3 minutes to get a sense of the narrative arc it is presenting and critiquing. The work restarts after 6 minutes.

Encounters

"Encounters" offers generative emoji-driven narratives about the impact (every pun intended) encounters with other people can have on our state of mind. The work unfolds endlessly, producing many stories of how people are affected by the people they encounter at a crossroads.

Juracán Borinqueño

I first wrote this piece as a Twitter bot in September 2018 to commemorate the anniversary of Hurricane María's devastating passage through Puerto Rico in 2017. When Twitter was destroyed by Elon Musk (X marks the spot where Twitter is buried) and Cheap Bots Done Quick! became inoperable, I ported it to a standalone HTML piece in early 2023 (read about it here). This work generates speculative scenarios before, during, and after the passing of a hurricane through Puerto Rico, based on my vivencias (lived experience). The work is in Spanish, but the browser can translate it automatically, if needed.

Protestitas 2023

"Protestitas 2023" generates an endless protest march on your browser in which angry Puerto Rican protesters march down a street chanting protest slogans on a variety of topics they are angry about. All protest slogans are drawn from real protests in Puerto Rico. This is partly a rescue from the original Twitter bot @Protestitas, partly an updated work and HTML reimplementation dealing with issues in 2023.

It's Complicated

"It's Complicated" is inspired by a lifetime of considering and debating the issue of Puerto Rico's status in relation to the U.S. The work generates a hypothetical Puerto Rican who talks about their provenance and then expresses an opinion for or against statehood, commonwealth, or independence for Puerto Rico. It was originally published in 2023 in The Los Angeles Review.

Re-published in Antología Lit(e)Lat, Volumen 2.

As you may know, Twitter’s recent changes have rendered CBDQ inoperable, and thousands of bots have gone silent as a result, a sad bot extinction event. Fortunately for my bots, my Chat GPT enhanced coding ability has allowed me to produce standalone Web versions of these, which has afforded me the opportunity to rethink and update the works. I will briefly list and describe them below:

Taco Hell Menu

This work is a critique of Taco Bell’s combinatorial approach to its Mexican-esque menu. It randomly generates a new menu item and a call to action every 30 seconds, or whenever you click on the Generate button.

This work is based on a Twitter Bot I launched on February 25, 2020 (@TacoHellMenu), which was inspired by this GIF and a conversation with Eugenio Tisselli. Its first iteration was built collaboratively in a bot-building workshop I gave at the US Naval Academy on February 25, 2020 for Perla Sasson Henry’s students.

July 2025 update: I have ported the bot to Bluesky using Blue Bots Done Quick!

Tiny Protests 2023

I programmed this work on June 7, 2023 adapting the code from “Tiny Protests / Protestitas” published in Taper #2, and with help from Chat GPT while adding and updating the slogans from the Twitter version. I updated the code to focus on protest slogans that are relevant in 2023. To learn more about other iterations of this work, visit the versions published in the ELC4. Click anywhere on the work to trigger fullscreen mode.

Protestitas 2023

Bonus: Tracery2HTML Template

This template offers a rudimentary structure for users to either copy-paste their Tracery code or modify and add to the provided code. I created this as a way to port my CBDQ bots to HTML, and am sharing it with the community in the same generous spirit that Kate Compton and V. Buckenham had when creating and sharing Tracery and Cheap Bots Done Quick! The page is more or less responsive (it should look decent on a phone). It reloads automatically every 30 seconds and goes fullscreen with any click.

This is the first of several coding engines I will create (with major help from Chat GPT) to lower the access barrier to creative coding, digital writing, and electronic literature. To use it, you can save this file and open it with a text/code editor or download it here. And because it is licensed with the MIT license, you already have my permission to use it and modify it as you see fit.

It was catalyzed by the recent Puerto Rico Status Act, which seeks “to resolve Puerto Rico’s political status” with a plebiscite that offers “eligible voters a choice of independence, sovereignty in free association with the United States, or statehood.” This is the latest attempt to resolve an issue that has been central to my Puerto Rican people since the U.S. invaded Puerto Rico in 1898 and has become increasingly complex over 125+ years as our economies, culture, history, and politics have become entangled.

Because Taper requires works to be no larger than 2 kb in size (2048 bytes), I focused this work on perspectives in favor and against the prospect of statehood for Puerto Rico, once again keeping the perspective focused on Puerto Rican perspectives. This piece is interactive and asks readers to click on the emoji to randomly select a hypothetical boricua and a real perspective on the issue of statehood for la isla.

The most recently published and most complete exploration of this concept is “It’s Complicated,” commissioned and published by The Los Angeles Review as part of its Latinx e-lit folio. This version builds on both bot and Taper versions to create a time-based randomized exploration of the three status options, plus it adds statements rejecting the issue or the very idea of holding a referendum (thank you, Andie Pabón Thomas for this important idea). This version is designed for exhibition by having full screen capability, and unfolding over time. Each iteration takes 15 seconds to unfold: each emoji represents a hypothetical Puerto Rican that describes their provenance and 5 seconds later offers a perspective on the status issue. The random background colors help signal that it’s someone else in a different context.

So what do I think about this issue? My intent and opinions must be interpreted through the work(s). (Remember that I’m a literature professor: I’m not giving it away that easily). That being said, there are hints in the source code for both “Tentative” and “It’s Complicated,” which you can access in a computer (usually with a right click or through your browser’s menu bars). But whatever specific stance I might have about each status opinion– the works clearly express ideas that I don’t personally agree with– one point should become clear: there are many reasons why this is such a complex topic for my people and this might be why no previous attempts at resolving it have provided a clear mandate from our people, wherever we might be.

A final note: I created these works in English because my primary audience is USAmericans and other people around the world who might wonder how Puerto Ricans feel about this. Some of my compatriots might be triggered by these works– this is such a fiercely debated topic that it has broken families and friendships– and may take offense to not seeing their own perspectives reflected in the work. To them I say that I have tried to represent as many voices and perspectives as I’ve heard over the course of a lifetime of considering this issue. And I hope people can at least use them to at least have a more nuanced understanding of our neocolonial condition and the imperfect choices that lie before us.

This Spring, I created a series of works that explore Puerto Rico’s relation to the United States.

From teaching how to create memes that present complex ideas and critiques in my Digital Media Criticism course to a fiscal crisis in Puerto Rico that has led to an indefinite student strike at the University of Puerto Rico, I have had plenty of inspiration to explore this popular digital media genre. So here are some of my most recent memes.

My most recent one is inspired by this meme about Republicans planning to repeal of the Affordable Care Act.

Here’s a link to the GIF version.

This series was inspired by Puerto Rico’s National Strike on May 1, 2017– a massive peaceful protest against austerity measures that was misrepresented by the media and many people when a small group of people engaged in vandalism after the event had concluded.

Finally, when Governor Ricky Rosselló, who repeatedly stated during his campaign that the debt could be paid and that he wouldn’t declare bancruptcy, declared bankruptcy, I created these two memes (click to enlarge).

I don’t know how much of an impact these memes will have, but they’re fun to create and circulate nicely in social media. My most successful one has received of 4,500 shares between Facebook and Twitter since it was launched a week ago. Most importantly, they allow me to express my perspective on current events while I practice my skills on and learn about what makes this such a popular digital genre.

And before anyone corrects me on this, I will clarify that I’m aware that:

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-950" src="https://leonardoflores.net/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/imagemacron.png" alt="Text over image of French presiden Macron: "This is not a meme / It's an image macron"" width="600" height="600">

Last semester, my Digital Humanities Internship course created Hostos Bot 1.0, a program that draws from a corpus of 16 books written by Eugenio María de Hostos to generate new (and absurd) texts, which are published every 6 hours in social media networks (Tumblr, Twitter, and Facebook). This bot was a collaborative effort: under my direction, the DH Internship students prepared the textual corpora, and Anderson Román wrote the program (using Node.js) to generate the texts and publish them to Tumblr.

Here are some features I’m interested in developing for Hostos Bot 2.0:

Develop the ability to post directly to Twitter and Facebook, instead of via Tumblr.

Develop interactivity via Twitter, so the bot replies to those who wish to address it.

To have the bot comment on trending topics in Puerto Rico, by drawing on newspaper headline feeds and selecting language from it to seed its Markov Chain text generator.

I need 2-3 students who can work with Node.js (or can port it to another scripting language), can work with the Twitter, Facebook, and Tumblr APIs, and can set this up as an autonomous hosted bot. I can provide guidance and resources for the project.

This bot will be presented at international electronic literature conferences and at the Magna Feria del Libro Eugenio María de Hostos.

Pues empieza. Se trataba de mis visitas. (original)

Performance

This 10-minute performance will feature four scholars reading from a Twitter stream set to feature the output of multiple bots, including some created by the scholars themselves. Each reader will select several bots to read out loud, and the reading sequence will be determined by the curated Twitter stream, which will be displayed live on screen. The resulting juxtapositions should be both humorous and thought-provoking, with the individual readers’ voices lending continuity to the bots. During the performance, there will be a few moments in which a reader focuses on the text generated by a single bot, in the tradition of a solo riff.
