Crossed Readings
"Crossed Readings" plays on a subset of the "Woman Yells at Cat" meme that presents a text that the woman reads as it was probably intended and the cat reads it more subversively, emphasizing the unintended potential reading, to great hilarity. Five of the thirteen texts included in this work come from that meme, while the other eight reference and play with literary and other types of texts. One is based on the story of an American young man who visited Puerto Rico and saw all these signs that read (according to him) "Hey hi hello," which he took as a sign of friendliness from Puerto Ricans, but it really means "We have ice" 😁. This exploration offers us the opportunity to reflect on found and written texts that can be arranged in a 2×2 (or larger) grid and read horizontally one way, and vertically, or circularly another way with fun results.
